Work in our companion diocese,
the Diocese of the Dominican Republic

The Lord has truly blessed the companion relationship that the Diocese of Western Louisiana has with the Diocese of the Dominican Republic. In two short years, what began as a dream with limited seed money, has become a flourishing ministry that has borne much fruit.
The centerpiece of the work has been two medical/construction teams that traveled to the Dominican Republic in the summers of 1999 and 2000 to work in the slums of Barahona, a sugarcane processing city.
In this impoverished area, where no medical help is available, the medical teams treated more than 1,500 men, women and children and dispensed almost 4,000 prescriptions.
Our construction teams built a home for a family left homeless after a hurricane. They also constructed five outhouses for the neighborhood in which they were working.
The Dominican
Development Group

The Dominican Development Group is a partnership between the Diocese of Western Louisiana, the Diocese of Southwest Florida, the Diocese of South Carolina along with the Dominican Episcopal Church for the development of the Dominican Church to further its development and to make the Dominican Church self-sufficient. Such close cooperation maximizes the impact of the financial support and on-the-ground work done by medical and construction mission teams.

Dominican Mission 2001
A third mission to the Dominican Republic is now in the planning stages. Although specific dates have not been set, it is known that the team will be traveling in June.
Prayer is needed as mission planners begin to gather supplies, raise funds and recruit team members.
You can become a part of this effort as a team member that will travel to the Dominican Republic or as a support team member who will pray for the success of the mission and support it financially with donations. You can be a part of the effort; don't be bashful!
Deacon Don Leger is the canon missioner of the Diocese of Western Louisiana and in that capacity, he is the person to contact if you need more information, want to be a team member or want to contribute to the ongoing effort.
