New
dean named at St. Mark's Cathedral, Shreveport
The Rev'd Dr. Jacob W. Owensby has accepted a call from the Vestry of St. Mark's Cathedral, Shreveport, LA, to be the Cathedral's second dean beginning in January of 2009.
Dr.
Owensby is 51 years old and is currently serving as rector of Emmanuel Episcopal
Church in Webster Groves, Missouri, where he has been for the last five years.
He has also served as rector at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Huntsville,
Alabama and assistant rector at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Jacksonville,
Florida. Before attending seminary, Dr. Owensby was an associate professor
of philosophy at Jacksonville University also in Jacksonville, Florida.
Dr. Owensby was awarded his BA in psychology, and his MA and PhD degrees in philosophy, from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and received his Master of Divinity from The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. He was ordained to the Priesthood in 1997.
Dr. Owensby is married to the former Joy Bruce, who is a high school teacher, and they have three children; Andrew, 20, who is currently a U. S. Marine stationed in California, Meredith, 16, and Patrick, 12. His hobbies include running, listening to music, playing guitar, movies and reading.
During the interview process, Dr. Owensby listed the objective of his ministry as being "To equip and empower the Baptized to proclaim the Good News of the risen Christ, to grow the Church spiritually and numerically, and to continue Christ's work of reconciliation in the world." He lists his specialties as preaching, spiritual guidance, pastoral care, church growth and development, administration and liturgy.
Dr. Owensby replaces the Very Rev'd M.L. Agnew Jr., who retired on July 1, 2007.
